Steve Yzerman Steps Down as Red Wings GM, Will Remain in Advisory Role

The Detroit Red Wings will soon begin a new era in their front office after announcing that Steve Yzerman is stepping down as executive vice president and general manager to transition into a senior advisory role with team governor and CEO Chris Ilitch.

The move marks the end of Yzerman’s second stint leading hockey operations in Detroit, though his influence on the organization is far from over. The Hall of Famer will remain in his current position during the transition process, assisting with day-to-day operations while the Red Wings search for a new head of hockey operations and general manager.

Yzerman Remains Part of Detroit’s Future

Although Yzerman is relinquishing his duties as general manager, he will continue to play a significant role within the organization. According to the Red Wings, he will advise Ilitch while also assisting in the search for his successor.

“I am sincerely grateful to Chris and the entire Ilitch family,” Yzerman said in the team’s statement. “This organization has given me incredible opportunities, from my time as a player to the privilege of returning as general manager. I’ve appreciated every experience throughout the years, and I’m extremely proud to remain part of this great franchise.”

The announcement ensures there will be continuity during what is expected to be one of the most important front-office searches in recent franchise history.

A Franchise Icon On and Off the Ice

Few individuals have meant more to the Red Wings than Yzerman.

The longtime captain spent 22 seasons with Detroit from 1983 to 2006, becoming one of the greatest players in NHL history. During his playing career, he captured three Stanley Cups while recording 692 goals and 1,063 assists for 1,755 points in 1,514 games.

Following his retirement, Yzerman moved into the front office, helping the organization win another Stanley Cup during the 2007-08 season before departing in 2010 to become general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

His eight-year tenure in Tampa Bay transformed the Lightning into one of the NHL’s model organizations, laying the foundation for multiple Stanley Cup championships after his departure. Detroit brought Yzerman home in 2019, hoping he could oversee another championship build.

Mixed Results as General Manager

Yzerman inherited an organization in the midst of a difficult rebuild and spent the past several seasons reshaping the roster through the draft, free agency and trades.
