NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs Big Hire, Blues Target Nikishin, Flames Eye Xhekaj

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Toronto Maple Leafs are making a major off-ice investment with a sweeping overhaul of their performance department. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Blues are eyeing a young Carolina Hurricanes defenseman. Is there anything to the speculation? Finally, the Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers are listed among teams circling Canadiens blueliner Arber Xhekaj as questions linger about his future in Montreal. Is Calgary still interested or have they already pivoted?

Maple Leafs Overhaul Performance Department

The Toronto Maple Leafs made a significant organizational move on Monday, hiring veteran sports performance executive Andy O’Brien as Vice President of Sport Performance. They also announced that O’Brien has essentially rebuilt the team around him.

O’Brien brings over 25 years of experience and has been part of four Stanley Cup-winning organizations. His resume includes time with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers, along with recent roles working closely with elite players like Sidney Crosby and John Tavares. And no, this is not a long-term, subtle play to attract Crosby to the Maple Leafs.

Joining O’Brien are Dr. Craig Slaunwhite, who will serve as Director of Health and Performance Integration; Jason Martin, who steps in as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach; and Josh Crouse and Dr. Jordan Shallow, who round out the group. GM John Chayka emphasized the importance of this move, signaling a shift toward maximizing player health and performance over the grind of a full season and playoffs.

Blues Eye Nikishin Amid Youth Movement

The St. Louis Blues are in the rumor mill again (yesterday, we reported that Robert Thomas is staying put). A new name has surfaced on their radar. According to The Hockey News’ Julian Gaudio, the Blues have interest in Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Alexander Nikishin.

He writes, “Rumors began linking the Blues to Nikishin earlier this off-season when the Hurricanes revealed they were willing to listen to trade offers for Nikishin.” The Blues are trying to get younger. St. Louis has already made waves this offseason by adding forwards Mason McTavish, Connor McMichael, and Milton Gastrin. Adding Nikishin would continue that trend.

Nikishin showed promise last season with 11 goals and 33 points in 81 games, establishing himself as a potential cornerstone on the blue line. However, his diminished role during the playoffs and speculation that he could be moved this summer have him linked in rumors to some bigger trade discussions.

This might not be an easy deal, as talk is the Hurricanes are trying to package Nikishin with Jesperi Kotkaniemi to shed salary.

Flames, Flyers Linked to Xhekaj Interest

Arber Xhekaj continues to generate interest around the league, with the Calgary Flames now reportedly joining the Philadelphia Flyers as potential suitors for the Montreal Canadiens defenseman.

According to Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette, Calgary had interest in Xhekaj dating back to the trade deadline in March. However, the situation has become less clear in recent weeks. Reports suggest the Flames’ pursuit may have cooled after acquiring Jake Middleton from the Minnesota Wild in the Blake Coleman trade.

That leaves Montreal in an interesting position with the 6-foot-4, 240-pound restricted free agent. Xhekaj brings a physical edge and defensive presence that is highly valued, but there’s still uncertainty about his long-term fit with the Canadiens. They want to keep him, and he wants to stay. But there isn’t necessarily room for everyone. The Canadiens have a lot of defensemen, and there’s a trade market for Xhekaj.

With multiple teams still potentially in the mix and no clear indication of which way the Canadiens are leaning, Xhekaj remains one of the more fascinating names to watch as the offseason unfolds.
