Stars Ink Jamie Benn to Huge Extension

The Dallas Stars and captain Jamie Benn have come to terms on a huge contract extension that will keep him under contract through the 2024-25 season. The annual average value of the deal works out to $9.5 million, which trails only Patrick Kane ($10.5 million) and Alexander Ovechkin ($9.538 million) as the league’s highest paid wingers. Benn finished second in points in the NHL last season, trailing only Kane in the Art Ross trophy race.

Benn’s contract extension should come as no surprise to anybody given his impressive output over the last few seasons. Benn has skated in 245 out of a possible 246 games over the last three seasons and has scored 110 goals and 225 points. Those numbers have put him among the league-leaders in points over the last two seasons and earned him the Art Ross trophy in 2014-15, and a Hart trophy nomination in 2015-16.

With Benn and Seguin both entering the prime years of their career at forward, the Stars look like they will be set with their dynamic duo for years to come. Seguin remains under contract through the 2018-19 season at an affordable $5.75 million. With both of the team’s top stars comfortably under contract for the next few years, the Stars appear to have a very bright future, especially after a breakout season that put the rest of the NHL on notice last year.
