On Tuesday night, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Detroit Red Wings were close to finalizing a seven-year contract extension with winger Alex DeBrincat. The next day, the Red Wings made it official:
With this bit of business, the Red Wings have secured one of their most important offensive players for the foreseeable future. The agreement keeps DeBrincat in Detroit through the 2033-34 season, providing the organization with long-term stability at a critical position as it continues its pursuit of a return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The deal represents a significant raise for the 28-year-old winger, who is playing the final season of a four-year, $31.5 million contract signed in July 2023.
DeBrincat’s new deal carries a total value of $91 million, reflecting his importance to Detroit’s offense and his standing among the team’s core players.
DeBrincat Remains Central to Detroit’s Plans
DeBrincat has established himself as Detroit’s most consistent goal-scoring threat since arriving from the Ottawa Senators in 2023. He led the Red Wings with 41 goals and 85 points during the 2025-26 season, continuing a productive run that has seen him score 107 goals across his first three seasons with the franchise.

His scoring ability makes him an essential component of Detroit’s forward group. DeBrincat provides a reliable finishing presence, particularly on the power play, and his offensive production complements the playmaking abilities of teammates such as Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin.
The extension also represents a significant commitment from a player who has repeatedly expressed a desire to remain in Detroit. DeBrincat grew up in the Detroit area and has spoken openly about his pride in wearing the Red Wings’ jersey, even as the organization has navigated considerable uncertainty surrounding its leadership and roster.
In September, DeBrincat reiterated his desire to stay with the franchise despite the departures and potential changes facing the team. His willingness to commit long-term gives Detroit an important piece around which to build its offense.
A Major Investment in Detroit’s Future
The $13 million annual salary represents a substantial financial commitment, particularly as Detroit balances its veteran core with the need to retain developing players. However, securing a proven 40-goal scorer addresses one of the most difficult challenges facing NHL teams: finding consistent high-end offensive production.
The seven-year term also provides Detroit with continuity as its younger players develop and the organization attempts to end its lengthy postseason drought. DeBrincat, Raymond, and the team’s emerging forward talent give the Red Wings several potential building blocks, although continued improvement across the roster will be necessary for the club to become a legitimate contender.
For Detroit, the agreement eliminates the uncertainty surrounding DeBrincat’s pending unrestricted free agency and ensures that one of its most productive forwards remains part of the team’s long-term plans.
Next up: Simon Edvinsson. Detroit’s 23-year-old top-pairing defenseman still needs a new contract and will likely command $9 million-plus per year.
