Seth Jarvis’ Instant Impact Highlights Importance In Hurricanes’ Lineup

Despite Thursday night’s 6-5 shootout loss to the Edmonton Oilers, the Carolina Hurricanes saw one of their franchise players return to the lineup. After shoulder surgery in June, Seth Jarvis was activated from injured reserve (IR) Wednesday, Oct. 21. In his first game back since June 14, when the team won the Stanley Cup, his impact was felt right away.

Jarvis’ Instant Impact

After practice Wednesday, Jarvis shared his feelings ahead of his first game back, “I know how much work I put into my shoulder and, in general, getting ready to play… Now that I’m close, I just couldn’t be more excited.” He did not disappoint as he scored in his return, and it was a highlight-reel play. Following a chip from Jordan Martinook, he was able to tight-turn Evan Bouchard, put him in the spin cycle, and deked Devon Levi with some silky smooth handles.

Talk about an instant impact in his return, just a day shy of the four-month mark of what was supposed to be the timeline of his return. In his return, Jarvis had three shots, four hits, one goal, and was a plus-1 on the night. His time on ice was 15:15, and he had 24 shifts in the game. He was on the third line with Martinook and Jesperi Kotkaniemi, and was part of the second power play unit. The Hurricanes didn’t want to throw so much at him in his first game back, but he was all over the ice, and it felt like he didn’t miss the first 11 games in the 2026-27 season.

After the shootout loss, Jarvis shared his thoughts on his performance in his return. “The first period, I wasn’t feeling too great. I was just kind of catching up to the game. After that, I thought I got my legs back and got a lot better. One of my biggest things is defense and being responsible. I thought that part was kind of lacking tonight, and that’s a big reason why we didn’t pull this one out. Obviously, there’s some stuff to clean up, but I mean, I kind of expected that coming into my first game.”

It’s understandable for Jarvis to feel that way since he hasn’t had much game pace since the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup back in June. He could only do so much during training camp, preseason practices, and the first few weeks of the regular season. It takes guys a while to catch back up to regular game speed. It’ll take a couple of weeks, but there is no doubt he will get there.

It’ll be interesting to see how Jarvis will play fully healthy for the first time in a couple of years. He’s spent the last two seasons with a torn labrum and had to wear a harness. It’s remarkable to think that he scored 32 goals in 2024-25 and 2025-26. With 72 games left in the season, there is a good chance he could reach 30 goals for the fourth consecutive season. If he can reach 30 or more with a torn shoulder, imagine how he will be with no pain.

All in all, there was a sense the team was happy to have Jarvis back in the lineup against the Oilers. With the injuries to Jordan Staal, Taylor Hall, and Mark Jankowski, they needed “Jarvy” back in the worst way. The Hurricanes are 8-2-2 with one game left on their North Carolina State Fair trip Saturday night in St. Louis. Hopefully they can secure a third win on the road trip, and finish 3-1-1 and bring home seven out of a possible 10 points.

If anything, it’s good to see the Hurricanes return to the Lenovo Center next Tuesday night (Oct. 27) with Jarvis back in the lineup. Expect some loud cheers for the Winnipeg native back on home ice for the first time in 2026-27.
