In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the Minnesota Wild are working to lock up Quinn Hughes, but there’s buzz that things may not be going so smoothly. Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers may be limited in how they round out their roster, and a PTO might not be in the cards. The Detroit Red Wings remain stuck in limbo with Dylan Larkin, and there is news on the recovery status of Auston Matthews.
Wild Working to Extend Quinn Hughes Amid Devils Speculation
The Minnesota Wild continue to work toward a contract extension with Quinn Hughes, as GM Bill Guerin confirmed talks are ongoing with the star defenseman and his camp. Hughes, 26, is entering the final year of his deal and could become an unrestricted free agent next summer, making this a crucial negotiation for the franchise.
While the Wild would prefer a long-term extension in the five-to-eight-year range, speculation suggests Hughes could consider a shorter deal. One hurdle is the talk that he wants to align his next contract with his brother, Jack Hughes, of the New Jersey Devils. If talks stall, New Jersey could emerge as a serious contender, and the Wild might have to consider a trade. The longer negotiations drag on, the more pressure builds on Minnesota to get a deal done.

Making things potentially more challenging is the fact the Wild still haven’t landed another center, which is high on their to-do list. If they can’t acquire that player, and they aren’t as competitive as they’d like to be, does that delay Hughes and his signing?
Oilers Unlikely to Use PTO Route Despite Available Talent
The Edmonton Oilers may not be finished tweaking their roster, but don’t expect them to lean heavily on professional tryouts (PTOs) this offseason. Despite several notable free agents still unsigned—including Patrik Laine and Vladimir Tarasenko—insiders suggest Edmonton is unlikely to bring many, if any, players into camp on tryouts.
Specifically, Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson writes, “with only four exhibition games rather than normal eight for Oilers and vets having to play two games minimum I just don’t see many PTO’s if at all. Have to look at prospects too.”
Fewer opportunities to see these PTO players in action and the need to evaluate their own talent makes it harder to justify bringing in veterans for a limited look.
Dylan Larkin Trade Talks Stalled Amid Red Wings GM Search
It’s been two months since reports surfaced that Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin requested a trade, but there’s still little progress toward a deal. One major factor is the organization’s ongoing search for a new general manager.
Helene St. James of The Detroit Free Press writes:
“A person with knowledge of the Red Wings’ search process told the Free Press that Ilitch hired a search firm to help determine who should replace Steve Yzerman. Yzerman served as Wings general manager from April 19, 2019-July 15, 2026, when it was announced he would transition to a role as a senior advisor.”

Until a new GM is hired, any potential Larkin trade appears to be on hold. While teams like Minnesota had been linked as possible destinations, trade discussions have reportedly stalled over Detroit’s asking price. The Red Wings are seeking an established NHL player in return, with Matt Boldy previously rumored as a target—an option Minnesota has no interest in entertaining.
Maple Leafs Encouraged by Auston Matthews’ Recovery Progress
There’s cautious optimism in Toronto as Auston Matthews continues his recovery from a serious knee injury. The Maple Leafs captain was recently seen skating and shooting in Switzerland, marking another positive step after undergoing surgery months ago.
Matthews is working his way back from a Grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion. His progression from skating to shooting suggests he’s on track, but questions remain about whether he’ll be fully ready for training camp.
