Devils Sign Nico Hischier to a 5-Year Contract Extension

The New Jersey Devils have secured the future of their captain, announcing a 5-year contract extension with Nico Hischier carrying an average annual value of $11.7 million. The deal keeps the franchise cornerstone in New Jersey well into the next decade. The extension had been widely anticipated throughout the offseason as negotiations between the two sides reportedly progressed steadily toward an agreement.

Hischier, 27, was scheduled to enter the final season of the seven-year contract he signed in 2019. Rather than allowing their captain to approach unrestricted free agency next summer, general manager Sunny Mehta and the Devils elected to finalize a long-term commitment.

The contract makes Hischier one of the NHL’s highest-paid centers and underscores just how valuable he is to the Devils organization. Selected first overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, he has been the face of the franchise ever since. While his offensive production has established him as one of the league’s premier two-way forwards, it is his complete game, leadership, consistency, loyalty, and ability to excel in every situation that have made him an irreplaceable cornerstone of the organization.

Captain Remains the Face of the Franchise

Since being named captain in 2021, Hischier has developed into the unquestioned leader of the Devils. His work ethic, consistency, and ability to match up against the league’s best players have made him the standard for the club both on and off the ice.

Although New Jersey endured a disappointing 2025-26 campaign that saw the team miss the playoffs, Hischier remained one of the organization’s brightest spots. He led the Devils with 28 goals while appearing in all 82 games and continued to serve as one of the NHL’s elite defensive centers.

His combination of offensive production, dominance in the faceoff circle – where he led the entire NHL in faceoff wins – elite penalty-killing ability, and willingness to take on the toughest defensive matchups has established him as one of the NHL’s premier two-way centers. Hischier is consistently tasked with shutting down opposing stars while continuing to produce offensively, a responsibility few players handle as consistently or effectively. His ability to excel in all three zones has made him one of the most complete and dependable players in the league.

Beyond his on-ice impact, Hischier has become the foundation of the culture the Devils are striving to build. Throughout his career, the organization has emphasized accountability, competitiveness, and a team-first mentality, and he has embodied each of those qualities. Whether leading by example through his relentless work ethic or setting the standard in practices and games, he has earned the respect of teammates, coaches, and fans alike. As captain, he has provided steady leadership through both rebuilding years and playoff expectations, making him not only the face of the franchise but also the player who best represents the identity the Devils want to establish for years to come.
