The Washington Capitals are off to an impressive 3-1-0 start to begin the 2026-27 NHL season. After their blockbuster offseason moves, it is unsurprising they’ve had such a strong start. They added an impressive level of offense, size, and strength to an already skillful roster. In particular, the team’s first line has worked wonders right out of the gate.
Alex Tuch, Pierre-Luc Dubois, and Tom Wilson have anchored the top line through their first four games. Tuch’s recent move to the Capitals has stirred excitement, mainly because of his speed and offensive prowess. Dubois returns after missing much of last season with an injury, and Wilson has been a Capitals staple for 14 seasons.
First Line Chemistry
These three have already shown impressive chemistry on the ice. They had a particularly impressive showing in the team’s home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The trio contributed three consecutive goals, with each member scoring once. Wilson scored to end the first period, with Dubois’s assist. He and Tuch each scored in the second period, both assisted by Wilson.

Their biggest assets are their size and speed. All three are listed at 6-foot-4 and at least 220 pounds. Together, they have immense muscle and physicality, enabling them to shut down the opposition with ease and maintain control of the puck. They showed their defensive abilities against the Penguins. The group was able to keep Sidney Crosby‘s line off the scoresheet, and Crosby had “his first pointless, minus-4 game in nearly four years”, per Mike Vogel.
All three are stellar, speedy skaters, even given their large frames. Dubois tops the group with a 22.06 miles per hour (MPH) skating speed. Per NHL Edge, he ranks in the 81st percentile in the league. Tuch has reached a max speed of 21.75 MPH, and Wilson has achieved 21.45 MPH. Their speed allows them to dominate the ice, set up and execute plays quickly, and get to the net before opponents even have time to think.
A Well-Rounded Line
It is worth noting that Dubois was acquired by the Capitals mainly to fill a defensive role. However, he quickly proved that he is a true two-way player. In his first season with the team, 2023-24, he was on the ice for 73 even-strength goals and just 44 goals against. He had 20 goals and 46 assists, posting career highs in assists and points that season.

“I think the best defense is offense,” said Dubois. “I always believe in that, so I think the more we can have the puck, keep it, and almost play keep away with it, I think you’ll set yourself up in a good spot.” He went on to speak highly of his linemates, saying that “those two guys can obviously defend really well.”
Tuch and Wilson are exceptional wingers to pair with a player like Dubois. Both wingers are right-shots and adept at even-strength play and special teams. Since 2022-23, Tuch and Wilson are two of just 10 league forwards to average at least 2:15 per game on the power play and at least 1:45 per game on the penalty kill.
Head coach Spencer Carbery remarked on the wingers, saying, “They’re just two really, really good two-way wingers that are in a rare class of being that good in the league, offensively and defensively. And I think the start that they’ve got off to, they see the game very, very similar.” He added that Dubois is “a good centerman to facilitate two guys that play on both sides of the puck so well.”
Having a line of such well-rounded, 200-foot players is a rarity. The Capitals have locked down something truly special in this trio, and fans can expect high production from the first line as the season continues. Wilson leads the team in goals (two) and points (five) across the first four games. Dubois has four points (one goal, three assists), and Tuch has three goals.
The Capitals will be in action again on Sunday against the Seattle Kraken. They travel briefly to Raleigh to face the Carolina Hurricanes, then travel home to face the Montreal Canadiens the following day. They finish out the week against the New Jersey Devils.
