Blue Jackets Re-Sign Matt Calvert

The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed RFA forward Matt Calvert to a three-year contract with Rob Mixer reporting that the deal carries an AAV of $2.2 million.

Calvert played 56 games for the Blue Jackets last season, scoring 13 goals and 10 assists. That was a career-high in goals for the 25-year-old wing, who set a career-high in points with 24 the season before, when he also played just 56 games.

As you can see in the charts below, it’s a solid signing for Columbus. Calvert is still young and it buys the team into his unrestricted timeframe a bit. He’s generally helping his teammates play better and with his impact on teammate Corsi being fairly decent, it seems like the frightening look of impacts on teammate GA60 could be turned around.

This season was the first time in the five seasons he’s seen NHL games that he’s had a negative score-adjusted relative possession number. He finished the 2014-15 season with a -0.5% score-adjusted CF%Rel. In prior seasons, chronologically, he’s posted 3.6%, 5.5%, 5.8%, and 1.9%. His dCorsi last season was 25.83.

For Columbus, that ties up all their outstanding RFA business for the summer, though they have Boone Jenner and four HNL-level defensemen expiring next summer off RFA contracts and the team could begin to work on those contracts, should they choose to.
