Alexander Ovechkin, the greatest goalscorer in the history of the National Hockey League, and one of the greatest players the league has ever seen, has announced that he will be retiring following the conclusion of the 2026-27 NHL season.

After the media circus that was his chase of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record, it was unclear how much longer Ovechkin would want to stretch his truly unique career. For a player with so much style and flash on the ice (especially in his earlier years), Ovechkin wasn’t particularly interested in off-ice fame and attention.
When an email sent by the Washington Capitals’ PR department last Fall seemed to announce he was retiring last season, the team frantically announced that no decision had been made and his career was extended. Some thought he might try to sneak out without any fanfare after denying attention in the Capitals’ season finale in 2025-26, but that wasn’t the case as he signed for one final year with the Caps.
Alex Ovechkin has scored more NHL goals than any other player in history with his running total of 929 goals setting the bar that much higher for a record that was long thought to be untouchable. He also currently sits at 10th all-time in points with an astounding 1,688 points, putting him within striking distance of Mario Lemieux (1,723) and Steve Yzerman (1,755) in this, his final season.
He will retire as the undisputed greatest player in the history of the Washington Capitals, bringing them the first Stanley Cup victory in franchise history back in 2018. Ovechkin has also won three Hart Memorial Trophies as the league MVP, the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie (2006), and won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goalscorer nine separate times in a 13 season stretch.
Ovechkin has scored more 40 goal seasons than any other player in NHL history (9), more 30 goal seasons than anyone (20) as well as the most 20 goal seasons in history (21). While he has the clear potential to extend at least one of those records, Ovechkin’s legacy is already settled as one of the greatest players in the history of the National Hockey League.
The final home game of Ovechkin’s career will take place on Sunday, April 4, 2027 against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Capitals will finish the year on a short road trip, with the final game of a historic NHL career taking place against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, April 10, 2027.
