3 Takeaways From the Blackhawks’ 5-2 Loss to the Golden Knights

The 2026-27 season has finally arrived, and it is a critical one for Kyle Davidson and the Chicago Blackhawks. Facing off against the defending Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights set them up with a huge challenge right from the jump with everyone wondering where the Blackhawks stand.

Unfortunately for the Blackhawks, the Golden Knights looked the part of champions. They got off to a hot start, held on as the Blackhawks fought back, and ultimately walked away with a 5-2 victory. These are the takeaways from opening night for the Blackhawks.

They Showed Some Fight

The Blackhawks came into opening night facing some adversity thanks to Connor Bedard’s injury. It looked like they were in for a long night after the first period, but the young group showed some fight and didn’t give in.

New addition Jordan Greenway scored his first as a Blackhawk, a nice little wrist shot that cut the Vegas lead to 2-1. Then, after Jack Eichel made it 3-1, the Blackhawks cut it to 3-2 with a goal from Patrick Kane.

The end result was far from desirable but there are some nice things to take from this. Team defense has to be better, and they need to spend less time watching the puck. But the fact that they kept fighting is something to feel good about.

Vintage Kane Was Nice

Maybe the best moment of the night was Chicago’s second goal, scored by the returning Kane. An errant chip by Trevor Connolly went past Parker Wotherspoon, who was caught flatfooted and by surprise, leading to a Kane breakaway that he deftly put past Carter Hart.

The sequence showed his veteran awareness and his ability to shake off defenders quickly and make the most opportunities. He made an effortless move that left Hart sprawling before burying his first goal as a Blackhawk since Feb. 22, 2023.

There isn’t a lot to positively take away from this game, but seeing Kane light the lamp had to feel good. He may not be the Hart Trophy-caliber player he was during his prime, but Kane will create a few more memorable moments this season.

Chasing Defensively/Rough Knight

The Blackhawks needed more out of several young players coming into the season and unfortunately did not get the best out of all those pieces. More than anything, the Blackhawks got caught running around defensively.

There were several stretches in which the Blackhawks – all five of them – were chasing the puck. The Golden Knights looked like the better, more experienced team (because they are) as the young Blackhawks frantically chased.

Goaltender Spencer Knight also had a very rough night. The first goal was a nice shot by Victor Olofsson but still one Knight probably should have had. The fourth goal by Noah Hanafin was definitely one he would like back. It was a tough night for the young netminder, and he has to be better than that.

Outclassed by a Better Opponent

This is simply the Blackhawks being outclassed by a better team on their home ice. Playing anyone in their own barn on opening night is a tough ask, especially when it’s the team that went to the Stanley Cup Final the season before.

That’s not to excuse the clear flaws that the Blackhawks exhibited in this game. There is a lot to clean up, and the youthful core has to take the necessary steps in order to achieve their potential. There were a few bright spots but the Blackhawks have a lot to clean up before they head to Utah to play the Mammoth on Thursday.
